IN a groundbreaking first, old met new in a synchronised aerial display by a Second World War Spitfire and the RAF's latest acquisition, the Eurofighter Typhoon.
The amazing display was the highlight of a major event at RAF Coningsby to mark the launch of the 2008 RAF Association (RAFA) Wings Appeal.
Guests from across the country were invited to the event, called Brew for the Few, and held in and around the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Hangar. It was made more significant still as the RAFcelebrates its 90th birthday this year.
Music was provided by RAF Shades of Blue from the RAF Music Services, there was a special visit by a NAAFI wagon, and the launch of Brew for the Few, an idea to encourage people to invite friends, family or work colleagues to pop round for a cuppa in return for a small donation to the RAFA Wings Appeal.
John Smith's Tadcaster Brewery also used the event to celebrate 250 years of the brewery and the RAF's 90th anniversary by launching a new traditional Yorkshire dark ale called Finest Hour. A donation of 50p for every pint sold at the event went to RAFA.
