Alford Craft Market has provided 240 free pom pom kits to children, adults and seniors which will be turned into a huge pom pom garland for the town centre.

Alford Craft Market is a not-for-profit organisation, established in 1974, and it has been helping to raise the community spirit during the coronavirus lockdown.

A spokesman said: “[The recipients] will make up a pom pom, with a label. The colours are of course, the rainbow.

“When all the pom poms are returned they will be made into, hopefully, the largest and longest pom pom garland and this will be strung up around Alford Market Square or the large tree.

“Each label will have their names and of course, most importantly, a message to either their families, friends or just a message to the world, about anything that is currently happening in their own personal lockdown.

“Also, in the next few days, Alford Craft Market is sending out to 420 children in the area a free craft kit, to keep them occupied and learn a craft.”

It is hoped that the completed garland will be around 50 metres long, displayed in the first week of May.

As people cannot congregate in the town due to the lockdown, photographs of the finished product will be published online.

The Alford Craft Market thanked all those who have helped, including volunteers from the Chester and George Alford ‘Care and Share’ Community Support Group, and the Wool Factory which has kindly given them a generous discount.
